Vancouver AAUW members meet Lilly Ledbetter
A number of Vancouver Branch AAUW members attended the Pay Equity Panel Discussion at the Joint Oregon/Washington State AAUW Convention in Portland on April 25, 2014. Some of them are pictured above with panelist Lilly Ledbetter (second from right). Lilly Ledbetter was the plaintiff in the American employment discrimination case Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. She has since become a women’s equality activist. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 is a United States federal statute that was the first bill signed into law by President Barack Obama on January 29, 2009. The Act amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The new act states that the 180-day statute of limitations for filing an equal-pay lawsuit regarding pay discrimination resets with each new paycheck affected by that discriminatory action.
