From 2010 to 2012, AAUW Vancouver Branch members mentored 5th grade girls as part of a program sponsored by Women in Action and administered by the Vancouver School District Foundation. The experience was offered to 5th graders at three Vancouver elementary schools. The goal of YWIA is to encourage fifth grade girls to have confidence, faith in their ability to make the “right” choices and allow them to see the world through a different set of eyes. Mentors lead sessions that included information about finances and careers. In 2011, Vancouver AAUW won a $3000 National AAUW Breaking Through Barriers award for the program.
